What is the electrical grid?
The electrical grid is a complex network of high voltage transmission lines and generated power for consumers. The system is also known as an electrical power system that distributes a large amount of power from the generating station or power plants to smaller networks. In this modern era, the electrical grid is the most impressive engineering system as it provides electricity for all facilities, homes, schools, and so on every day and all year round. The electrical grid consists of a network of wires and equipment that connect.
Types of Electrical grid
The power station of the electrical grid is usually located close to the fuel source to reduce the system’s transportation cost. Most of the power plants are located in an isolated place where it is far away from the populated area. In general, the electrical grid is divided into two types, which are the regional grid and the national grid. The regional grid is a system that interconnecting different transmission systems in certain areas using the transmission line. On the other hand, the national grid interconnects different regional grids.
Elements of the electrical grid
In general, there are four elements of the electrical grid which are power generator, transmission line, distribution, and customer use. The power generator, often called power plants, comes in various types which are nuclear, solar, hydro, wind, thermal, and so on. This is the place where electricity is being made. From the power plant, the electricity is transmitted to longer distances.
The transmission line distributes high voltage electricity as well as connects power generators with electricity consumers. The transmission line can be either underground power cables or overhead power lines. The distribution line is a kind of system that starts at transformers and end up at homes, idnplay poker buildings, school, and so on. The electricity grid comes to an end when the electricity finally reaches the customer, allowing you to enjoy a wide range of electronic devices.
According to the size, there is some example of electricity grid such as wide area synchronous grid, microgrid, super grids, and also the smart grid. The synchronous grid is also known as interconnection is a regional scale of electricity grade. It operates at synchronized and the electricity is tied together under normal condition. A microgrid is a localized electricity system that normally that synchronized and connected to a traditional microgrid.
The super grid is a proposed and planned electrical grid that is used to increase transmission capacity. The ability to increase electricity is through balancing it across vast geographical regions.
